CHARACTERS

BILLY
One of the key comedy characters, Billy needs to have plenty of pace and attack and must establish a strong rapport with the audience. A good singing voice is essential.

KING NORBERT
Of middle years and with a bluff, slightly military energy. Needs a degree of authority to banish Prince Orlando. On the other hand, he is often the straight man in the comedy routines and it would be helpful if he has a good sense of comic timing. He also needs a degree of verbal dexterity!

QUEEN DOROTHY
The Dame! Has a sunny, happy go lucky disposition. Obviously, this is a comic role and it is vital that the actor also has a good sense of the ridiculous coupled with natural comic timing. It would be a bonus to hold a tune!

KITTY
A silent part. Shy, but mischievous and capable of big, childlike swings in mood. Great fun to play.

FAIRY PEACEFUL
Fairy Peaceful needs a degree of level headed sincerity as she is the reason the whole story doesn’t end in disaster! However, she also has some very funny lines and so an underlying twinkle would be a distinct advantage. She needs to be able to stand up to Carabosse and should be able to sing (and dance) with gusto.

FAIRY GRACEFUL
Plenty of scope to develop character. A good singing voice would be a bonus.

FAIRY BEAUTIFUL
Plenty of scope to develop character. A good singing voice would be a bonus.

FAIRY THOUGHTFUL
Plenty of scope to develop character. A good singing voice would be a bonus.

CARABOSSE
Carabosse is a great female baddy’s role and it provides a splendid opportunity for an actress to revel in the wickedness it demands. Like her cat, Carabosse is deeply competitive and this leads to a good deal of comedy – so the actress should also have a natural lightness of touch. She does not need a beautiful voice, but she must be able to put over a number with confidence and attack.

SPINDLESHANKS
Sexy, glamorous, a cat who is much more human than feline. She is childishly competitive, keen to be wicked, but has a sort of kooky charm. She should be able to move and dance with confidence. A good singing voice would be useful, although not essential.

PRINCESS AURORA
She is open and likeable. Alert to the possibilities of romance and immediately aware of the dizzy feeling of falling in love. She is trusting, yet inquisitive and should be able to stand up to her parents when she needs to. A good singing voice is important.

PRINCE ORLANDO
Dashing and handsome, with a slightly hesitant charm. This role can be played by male or female. A good singing voice is important.
